Congratulations on this Joy! Your post is encouraging. I’m trying to figure out how I can write more for possible submissions (it’s mostly a problem of time). I’m also going to see if I can get ahold of the book on creative depression. Thanks!
Yes, so little time considering the effort required. Happy to offer any guidance on submitting. I’ve had pieces published in literary journals (read: unpaid) and mainstream/traditional (paid).
thank you! I will probably take you up on that offer at some point. I'm going to take a writing retreat next week, where I hope to kind of figure out what I want, what's possible, and how to do it. No doubt I'll have some questions!
It’s not a money making business for sure. I got paid more in the early 90s before the internet took over. And now a Texan question: last time I was back I saw no armadillo roadkill. Are they faster or just fewer? In my 1960s childhood you couldn’t drive 20 miles without seeing the remains of the state animal. Congrats again on your story, Joy.
I would bet there are fewer armadillos these days. However, I did see some armadillo roadkill on my recent trip home to Corpus Christi (as well as two turtles, sigh). I also sometimes see them while out hiking. They are so blind!

Congratulations! I know how tough freelancing is... glad you’re keeping at it! ❤️
thank you! it is such a tough market and the $ rates haven't changed in decades
I know… Freelancing was so much tougher than being a staff writer. It’s amazing what other industries will pay for the same skills!

Also wonder if three’s climate piece—armadillos showing up in Illinois recently.
Oh my goodness- that’s crazy. You must be right.
I still see them regularly around my neighborhood, both dead and alive!
Congratulations on your publication! Cheering for you!
thank you!
Congrats, Joy! You’ve inspired me to dust off some story ideas and figure out where to pitch them. 😄
Huge congratulations! 💕
Wonderful. Good to see your hard work paying off! 🤩
That's amazing, Joy! Congratulations!
